Rule 13-4 Ball in hazard; prohibited actions.

Exception 2.

At any time, the player may smooth sand or soil in a hazard provided that it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and nothing is done to breach rule 13-2 with respect to her next stroke.

At a recent Rules seminar there was much discussion regarding the wording and it was the opinion of the five rules officials present that the wording was a little woolly and needed clarifying.

The decision has been made that it is safer to say that you are caring for the course when you rake a bunker before you take your shot.  If you fail to get out of the bunker and the ball lands on an area newly raked there is no penalty and you play the ball as it lies.
